At approximately 10:51 p.m. Tuesday, the Idaho State Police investigated a crash on westbound I-90 near milepost 9 between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene. The victim of that collision has been identified and ISP is still seeking information.

ISP received the call of a vehicle fire on the westbound shoulder of I-90. Upon arrival, troopers observed a fully engulfed passenger car burning on the westbound roadside with the fire spreading into the trees in the area.

Further investigation this morning has led to the vehicle being identified as a gray 2018 Subaru Cross Trek, a compact SUV.

Additionally, investigators found roadway evidence indicating the Subaru was eastbound on I-90 near milepost 9 when it drove into the median. After crossing the median, the Subaru vaulted across both westbound lanes and the raised metal guardrail and landed in the trees on the westbound roadside of I-90.

Working with the Kootenai County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as Darci G. Melvin, 54, of Post Falls.

Investigating Troopers would like to speak with anyone who may have more information on this incident. Anyone who witnessed a gray 2018 Subaru Cross Trek driving eastbound on I-90 from Post Falls prior to the collision, observed the collision itself, or who may have been on scene prior to law enforcement arrival and have not yet spoken to police, is urged to call ISP Trooper Enrique Llerenas at (208) 209-8730.
