Richards brings home state wrestling championship

Badger junior Eli Richards at the top of the dais as the 2021 Idaho 3A state 170-pound wrestling champion.

The Bonners Ferry Badger wrestling team finished the 2021 Idaho State 3A Championship Tournament in eighth place, with Badger junior Eli Richards, 31-6 on the season, winning the 170-pound state title on a 3-2 decision over South Fremont senior River Eddins.

In team results, South Fremont won the state title and Buhl finished second.

Badger junior Andrew Sandelin-Macintosh, 24-8, fell to Weiser senior Elijah Carter in the championship bout at 220 by technical fall at 4:56 to bring home a second-place state finish.

At 132, Badger senior Evan Barajas, 42-3 on the season, won a 9-6 decision over Buhl’s Chance Bennet to take third and Badger junior Jake Summerfield took sixth place. Isaiah Shottanana came home with a sixth place finish for the Badgers at 285.

Badger junior Kyle Smith won a 9-2 decision over Brad Benson of Marsh Valley to take fifth place at 160. At 195, Badger junior Jackson Richter defeated Snake River’s Drake Anderton on a technical fall at 3:36 for a fifth place finish.
