The Idaho Conservation League is offering a temporary, summer contract employment opportunity for a Grizzly Bear Conflict Prevention Research Analyst, who will investigate opportunities to promote coexistence between grizzly bears and people in rural northern Idaho and western Montana.
Through outreach to county governments and state and federal land managers, the Analyst will identify sites, such as campgrounds, day use areas, solid waste collection facilities, or other locations in need of bear-resistant infrastructure. The analyst will also produce cost estimates for the installation of bear-resistant infrastructure and identify potential funding sources to pay for these upgrades. An interim progress report will be due in mid July and a final report will be due in late August. This is a temporary, term-limited, contract position.
The position pays $4,000.
The Grizzly Bear Conflict Prevention Research Analyst will work with county solid waste departments, Idaho Department of Lands, Idaho Parks and Recreation, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management to identify public recreation sites, agency administrative sites, solid waste collection facilities, and other sites in northern Idaho and western Montana where grizzly bears could gain access to food, trash or other attractants and become conditioned to seek unnatural sources of food.
Identifying these sites will help ICL and its partners to understand the extent to which bear-proof infrastructure is needed throughout the region. The Analyst will also research and identify manufacturers of bear-resistant infrastructure and prepare cost estimates for needed upgrades. The Analyst’s final report will also identify potential sources of funding to pay for the purchase and installation of bear-resistant infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A passion for wildlife conservation
- A curious and analytical mindset
- Strong skills in writing and interpersonal communication
Experience using word processing software and spreadsheets
