In the wake of a pandemic that abruptly ended the Pearl Theater’s 2020 performance schedule in March, several of the performers who looked forward to playing in Bonners Ferry as well as some who made appearances here before the shut down have graciously joined the Pearl Theater board and KVT Radio to make possible a Very Merry Pearl Theater Christmas radio special, to be broadcast beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, and again at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24.
Artists taking part include Brittany Jean, who sent us the new Christmas song she wrote and recorded, “Christmas Wonder,” and Sofia Talvik, who recently release four new songs we’ll be playing, including the carol that could forever define the waning days of 2020, the title track, “This Mess We’re In.”
“My Christmas songs are generally on the darker side, so 2020 did not pose any obstacles for achieving that this year,” she wrote in the liner notes. “I think many artists including myself in the beginning of this pandemic thought that we’d finally have lots of time to create, something that can easily be pushed aside by a busy tour schedule a regular year. I also think that more artists than just me, then sat down with a deep sigh and no inspiration and no creative urge to do anything. Because touring, playing live and meeting people is what feeds inspiration, and we haven’t been able to do any of those things this year.”
As a step in the right direction, Sofia created her own Christmas special on Facebook.
West My Friend are also doing a seasonal special, “An Online Festivus (For the West of Us)” at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 20, which is solstice eve, the longest night of the year, which will take place on Zoom, and they, too, are taking part in the Very Merry Pearl Theater Christmas, as are Bridges Home, The Nightjars and Claude Bourbon, and we’ve invited a few more.
Bridges Home is putting on a live Christmas celebration on Facebook at 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 23.
“We are filled with joy at the prospect of sharing some Christmas music with you on multiple instruments and with our voices raised in song!” they wrote. “Plus, we will be sharing our brand-new, original Christmas song for the first time ever! Grab a plate of cookies, your favorite beverage and join the fun.”
It’s going to be a showcase of talent the Pearl Theater brings to the community most years, lost this year due to COVID19, a gift to the community and a reminder of the gem we have in the Pearl Theater. Not only do they bring world-class talent from around region and around the world to a Bonners Ferry stage, but, in less trying times, they host Missoula Children’s Theater, open mic nights, a monthly performers circle, locally-produced plays and more, all giving the nascent world class talent right here in Bonners Ferry the experience and confidence they need to step out onto the world stage.
During the Very Merry Pearl Theater Christmas radio special, we’ll throw in a few traditional Christmas songs, non-Christmas songs by Pearl performers, interviews and information about the Pearl Theater, all to sound a festive air and to provide an apt backdrop to your family’s Christmas Eve.
